Hannaford Festival of Brass 2013

130407-0375The 2013 HSSB Festival of Brass wound up on Sunday with a terrific concert at the Jane Mallett Theatre under the inspirational leadership of Alain Trudel. The concert featured the winner of this year’s Young Artist Solo Competition, Jonathan Elliotson performing William Himes’ Jubilance with the HSSB as well as the North American premiere of Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s Breath of Souls which received a thunderous ovation after the closing chords. The audience was on its feet again when the Hannaford Youth Band performed Celebration by youth band alumnus Jacob Plachta (repeated after the success of the Hannaford Youth, Junior and Community band’s Rising Stars concert on Friday night) and then joined the Silver Band on stage to close the weekend with Lovatt-Cooper’s Wall of Sound.

The weekend featured superb performances by the Metropolitan Silver Band, The Buffalo Silver Band, the Whitby Brass Band, the Maple Leaf Brass Band and the winners of the 2013 Hannaford Cup, the Weston Silver Band. Weston Silver Band’s Principal Euphonium, Robert Miller also won the Slow Melody Contest and reprized his winning solo with the HSSB on Sundays concert.

As part of the Festival of Brass, the Silver band presented an inspiring educational concert to students of the York Region School District. The slide trombone was on prominent display as trombone virtuoso Al Kay played superb solos and was joined by the incomparable trombone artistry of Alain Trudel and the trombone section of the band for a number of feature numbers.

Thanks so much to all those who participated for making the Festival of Brass weekend a success!
